Actuarial Expert
Actuarial Expert - Salary is Competitive
Location - York or Bristol
This is a great job for someone who loves to apply their technical excellence by understanding and providing challenge in the way assumptions are derived and actuarial reserves are calculated, both for reporting and for costing, and someone who enjoys seeing the broader picture as well as delving into detail when necessary.
The role provides the chance to get involved in all aspects of the development and oversight of our actuarial assumption set, and the methodology used to apply it, providing support to the Head of Basis Review and taking ownership of specific assumption areas.
If you are a qualified actuary looking to get a broad overview of the business while at the same time developing your technical skills in specific areas, this could be a great next step in your career.
A bit about the job:
The role has two main aspects:
Firstly, you will be responsible for overseeing the process for reviewing and setting actuarial assumptions (through managing MASF (Methodology & Assumptions Setting Forum) and CGC (Costing Governance Committee)), ensuring that all assumptions are reviewed on an appropriate cycle and that the proposals arising from that review are technically robust. This will involve coordinating with colleagues doing the review work, supporting the Head of Basis Review in providing challenge, producing summaries of proposals for senior management and the Board, and acting as key point of contact with our auditors.
Secondly, you will be responsible for developing and reviewing one of the areas of the actuarial basis, becoming subject matter expert in this area. Initially, this will be in the area of expenses and investment expenses.
This is a high-impact role which is likely to evolve over time.
You will be supported by a small team – currently two actuarial specialists and one actuarial trainee.
Skills and experience we’re looking for:
A qualified actuary with several years of varied experience within a Life Insurance environment, with an interest in actuarial methodology and experience analysis, and a desire to be involved in applying actuarial judgement in using the data and analysis to develop and get agreement on the overall basis.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex issues in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to work independently, think creatively and take responsibility for ensuring that the assumption setting process works well and deliverables are met.
Ability to work collaboratively and build effective relationships with colleagues across Finance and with other stakeholders across the business and with external auditors.
Broad knowledge of features and risks of life insurance products, and of how the various financial reporting, capital and pricing/costing metrics work.
