You'll be responsible for delivering secure, resilient and scalable products that support millions of customer and colleague interactions. Working closely with senior leaders across Product, Architecture, Security and Delivery, you'll define engineering strategy, build organisational capability and drive technology modernisation.

This is a highly visible leadership role with the opportunity to influence outcomes across Aviva while developing high-performing engineering teams.

What you'll be doing

As Head of Engineering, you'll lead a large engineering function responsible for delivering and operating digital products and platforms that support our customers and colleagues. You'll provide strategic leadership across your domain, ensuring technology solutions are secure, resilient, scalable and aligned to business priorities.

Working closely with leaders across Product, Architecture, Security, Data and Delivery, you'll help shape technology roadmaps, drive investment decisions and support the successful delivery of digital initiatives. You'll balance the demands of today with the opportunities of tomorrow, helping modernise platforms, strengthen engineering capability and improve customer outcomes.

You'll lead and develop Senior Engineering Leaders, Principal Engineers and multidisciplinary teams, creating an inclusive environment where people can thrive. A key part of the role will be embedding modern engineering practices, improving delivery performance and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and learning.

Skills and experience we're looking for

  • Proven experience leading large-scale engineering organisations, including developing senior engineering leaders, building high-performing teams and creating a culture of accountability, collaboration, inclusion and continuous improvement.
  • Experience defining and executing engineering strategy, including technology modernisation, platform transformation, investment planning and the adoption of modern engineering practices such as DevOps, automation, AI and cloud-based technologies including AWS/Azure.
  • Exceptional stakeholder leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships and drive alignment across business, product and technology leadership teams. Experience operating within large, complex or regulated organisations would be beneficial.
  • Strong technical credibility and commercial awareness, with experience making strategic decisions across engineering, architecture, security, risk, suppliers, cost management and long-term technology direction. Knowledge of cloud-native architectures, APIs and modern digital platforms.
  • A track record of delivering significant technology change and business outcomes, whether through digital transformation, platform modernisation or organisational change programmes. Experience within insurance, financial services or other highly regulated sectors, along with relevant engineering, cloud or architecture certifications, would be welcomed but is not essential.
  •
