Data Engineer

Location: London

Salary: Circa £50k

Aviva Zero is a personal lines insurer with a bold ambition: to be the best in the UK market. Headquartered in London, we combine the speed, ownership and experimental mindset of a start‑up with the deep expertise and financial strength of Aviva.

We’ve built a strong engineering culture where small, autonomous teams deliver high‑impact work quickly. If you enjoy solving real problems, owning outcomes end‑to‑end, and seeing the direct impact of your work, you’ll feel at home here.

The Role

You’ll join our Data Engineering team, responsible for building and evolving the data platform that powers insight across Aviva Zero. Our data consumers are not looking for basic dashboards — they’re analysts, actuaries and data scientists using high‑quality data to make decisions that directly impact our customers and our business.

You’ll work alongside application and data engineering teams to help ingest data from our modern AWS platform into Snowflake, learning how raw data is transformed using dbt into trusted datasets used by analysts, actuaries and data scientists. You’ll be involved throughout the delivery lifecycle, from early discovery through to production, developing your SQL and Python skills and gaining hands‑on experience with tools like Terraform, AWS CDK and GitHub Actions. With support from the team, you’ll contribute to good engineering practices such as testing, monitoring and observability using tools like CloudWatch, helping ensure our data platform is reliable, scalable and delivers real value to the business.

This is an ideal role for someone earlier in their data career, with strong foundations and big ambitions to grow in a modern, cloud‑first environment.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong SQL skills, including working confidently with complex data models
  • Experience deploying and monitoring workloads on a cloud platform (ideally AWS)
  • Experience with, or exposure to, a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake preferred)
  • Python fundamentals and familiarity with common data tooling such as Pandas, PySpark or Airflow
  • Bonus experience or strong interest in dbt, analytics engineering, infrastructure as code (Terraform/CDK), Airflow/MWAA, and data testing or observability practices
