This role would suit an experienced platform or infrastructure engineer who’s ready for a step into people leadership, or an existing engineering manager who enjoys balancing operational stability, continuous improvement, and team development in a fast‑moving, 24/7 environment.

A bit about the job

This role exists to lead and support a team of platform engineers responsible for the stability, performance, and resilience of critical production systems at Aviva. Skills and experience we’re looking for

  • Strong people management and leadership experience, including line management of platform engineers, setting clear objectives and priorities, coaching and developing individuals, managing performance, and fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high‑performing team culture while balancing delivery and operational outcomes
  • Strong hands-on technical background, including AWS, CI/CD pipelines (such as Jenkins), SQL Server, and modern platform environments, along with experience working in high availability, 24/7 or high‑transaction environments and a solid understanding of APIs and networking basics
  • Collaborate with third‑party development and delivery partners to support end‑to‑end shipping of code, ensuring quality standards are met and coordinating successful placement of releases onto Aviva‑managed infrastructure
  • Controls & Testing: Support controls assessments, review penetration test results, and help close out audit issues
  • Proven ability to oversee incident management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement in live production systems, supported by clear and confident communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical teams, business partners, and third‑party suppliers
