Senior Operational Risk Manager – 6-month Fixed Term paternity cover

Salary circa £80,000 Pro Rata

This is a great job for someone who is an experienced operational risk professional who enjoys shaping frameworks, influencing senior leaders and working across the full breadth of a complex organisation. You may already be operating at a senior level across policy, governance and assurance, or be looking for a high-profile opportunity to further develop your leadership and enterprise-wide impact. If you’re comfortable working with Boards, ExCo-level governance, and all three lines of defence—and enjoy setting direction rather than just following it—this role offers real breadth and visibility.

Start date: 1st July

A bit about the job:

This role plays a critical leadership role within Group Risk, helping to shape and embed Aviva’s Risk Policies, Business Standards and Operational Risk and Control Management (ORCM) framework across the Group. You will act as Aviva’s Core Document Gatekeeper, ensuring clarity, consistency and effective governance of the Risk Management Framework. You will also own and deliver key risk governance processes, including CEO attestation, UK Corporate Governance Code reporting and senior committee submissions. Partnering closely with first line risk teams, senior leaders and assurance functions, you will provide expert advice, constructive challenge and oversight. In this role, you will also lead a small team and use insight, assurance outcomes and data to continuously improve how risk is managed across Aviva.

Skills and experience we’re looking for:

  • Extensive experience in operational risk management, controls, and governance within regulated financial services or insurance.
  • Thorough understanding of UK regulatory requirements, corporate governance, and the Board’s role in risk oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex, end-to-end processes, balancing technical rigour with pragmatic business impact.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management, with the confidence to influence and challenge senior leaders constructively.
  • Strong leadership skills, including coaching, mentoring, policy ownership, framework design, and synthesising complex information into actionable insights.
