A bit about the job
As our Principal Engineer for Automation, you'll be Aviva’s technical authority across key platforms, including Appian, Tungsten (IDP) and Power Platform.
You’ll define the architectural patterns, engineering guardrails and quality standards that ensure we deliver secure, scalable and future-ready automation solutions.
You’ll join a collaborative engineering community focused on modernising how we build automation, improving performance and reliability, and uplifting technical capability across teams and suppliers.
You’ll take ownership of the most complex engineering challenges, shape our platform roadmaps, and directly influence how automation supports Aviva’s long-term technology strategy.
Skills and experience we’re looking for
Expert-level Appian engineering and architecture knowledge, with strong understanding of records/data fabric, CDTs, interfaces, process models and integrations.
Strong experience in IDP/Tungsten engineering, including document classification, extraction accuracy tuning, and exception-handling pipelines.
Demonstrated ability to solve high-impact technical problems across distributed automation systems, including performance, capacity, and HA/DR considerations.
Proven experience influencing technical direction, coaching engineers, and driving consistency in engineering practices across teams or suppliers.
Strong problem-solving, communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to explain complex topics in a clear, outcome-focused way.

Salary: £70,000 to £90,000 (depending on location, skills, experience, and qualifications)
